Chernobyl disaster evacuee 'forever grateful' to Welsh family who took him in
In 1999, 11-year-old Anton Honchanka travelled from radiation-affected Belarus to Wales through the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline program, spending a month with host families who provided him with clean air, food and water to help reduce radiation levels in his body. Now 38 with children of his own, Anton remains deeply grateful to the Welsh families who welcomed him, describing the experience as transformative and saying Wales has "stayed in my heart forever."
